Remember that the interior of the vehicle and its occupants must be visible. A window that is too tinted :

  • reduces the field of vision
  • impairs contrast perception;
  • affects the driver’s night vision.

Rear side windows and the rear window are not subject to this standard.

Fines* for glass
If your vehicle’s front side windows allow less than 70% of the light to pass through, you are subject to a fine. Here are two examples:

Example 1
A peace officer stops your vehicle and takes a photometric reading of the front side windows. The windows allow less than 70% of the light through. The officer issues you a statement of offence. The fine varies as follows:

Driver AND owner of a passenger vehicle: $154 to $274
Driver of a heavy vehicle: $125 to $344
Owner of a heavy vehicle: $249 to $525

Example 2
A peace officer stops your vehicle and gives you a notice to check the front side windows of your vehicle, requiring you to go to a mechanical inspection agent designated by the Society. Failure to have the inspection performed will result in a fine of $438 to $865. If the agent declares that the windows are not in compliance, he or she will issue a notice requiring the owner or driver to make the required modifications or have them made within 48 hours. The agent will be required to recheck the windows for compliance after that time. If the corrections are not made within the required time, the vehicle cannot be returned to the road. If you are still driving the vehicle, you may :

Receive a violation ticket that makes you liable for a fine of $154 to $274 per defect;
be required to store your vehicle at your own expense until a photometric check certifies that your vehicle’s windows are in compliance.

*These amounts, subject to change, include the fine provided for in the Highway Safety Code, court fees and a contribution to the IVAC (other fees may be added).
